Tesla acquired Fremont's automotive manufacturing facility in October 2010 from the NUMMI joint venture and has operated electric vehicle production there since 2010.
The Fremont factory's lineage in automotive manufacturing extends back generations, but its transformation began in October 2010 when Tesla purchased the facility for approximately $42 million. The property comprised 210 acres of the original manufacturing campus and included equipment and spare parts from the previous operator, NUMMI (New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc.), a joint venture between Toyota and General Motors. Tesla took possession on October 19, 2010, and began operations just eight days later on October 27, 2010.
The factory's pivot to electric vehicles represented a significant industrial shift in the Bay Area. Tesla has continuously expanded and modernized the facility to manufacture its growing line of vehicles, from the Model S to the Model 3 and beyond. The scale of the operation makes the Fremont factory one of the region's largest employers, drawing workers from across Alameda County and neighboring areas. The manufacturing campus includes not only assembly lines but also paint shops, welding, machining, and testing facilities.
